A little order for your photo archive

New numbers.
Both sides together.

Give your scanned photos new numbers while keeping each photo with the scan of its back. Both files share one number, even when only some photos have a back scan.

Your album, in order

Some photos tell their story on two sides.

Add the front scans and any scans of the backs. Each photograph gets one number.

Nothing is uploaded. Your originals are never changed.

    No scans added

Download a ZIP file, then open it to see your renamed copies.

    Why this tool?

    One photograph.
    One number.

Scanning both sides of a photograph gives you two files: the picture on the front and the writing or date on the back. Renaming every file in order can give those two scans different numbers, especially when only some photographs have a scanned back.

PairSort matches the scans by filename and gives each photograph one number. For example, Photo3.jpg is the front and Photo3_b.jpg is the back; _b marks the back. They become Album002.jpg and Album002_b.jpg together, even when you reverse the order.

Check the new filenames in the preview, then download your renamed copies. Your original files stay unchanged.

    Questions

How does PairSort know which scan is the back?

By filename. A back has the same name as its front plus an ending such as _b just before the file type: Photo3_b.jpg is the back of Photo3.jpg. If your files use another ending, such as _back, enter it under “How are back scans named?”. Capital letters and file types may differ, so a JPEG front can have a TIFF back.

Does it work with Epson FastFoto scans?

Yes. FastFoto names backs with _b and enhanced copies of the front with _a. PairSort keeps all three files on one number, for example Album001.jpg, Album001_a.jpg and Album001_b.jpg.

Can you reverse the order of an album?

Yes. Choose “Filename · last to first” under Photo order. Each back keeps the number of its front, so a reversed album still has one number per photograph.

What if my fronts and backs have unrelated names?

Rename them to a matching pair first; PairSort uses filenames to find pairs. A batch with only front scans works too.

Are my photos uploaded or changed?

No. Everything happens in your browser and your originals stay unchanged. You download renamed copies in a ZIP file, with a CSV list of the old and new names.

How many files can you rename at once?

Up to 1,000 files and 250 MB per batch. Split larger archives into albums and continue the numbering with “Start at”.
